Internet2 is a nonprofit consortium composed of more than 200 universities and industry and government entities working to develop and deploy advanced networking technologies to further education. The Smithsonian has been linked to Internet2 since 2002 through the University of Maryland, enabling SI museums and research units to collaborate, educate and disseminate information with leading-edge network applications, performance and reliability. Currently, the Tropical Research Institute uses Internet2 to conduct research and connect to an Internet provider in Panama. Other institutions use Internet2 to create virtual museums, remotely control underwater cameras and observatory-based telescopes, and conduct videoconferencing in high-definition with hundreds of participants.
